Utilizing Text Evidence in Socratic Seminar: Based on the readings in your class, select a high-interest topic and have students select evidence from their reading to support their ideas in a Socratic Seminar for this 2-3 day lesson.
- Provide students with high-interest reading(s) of your choice. Have them annotate using the levels of questions.
- Using their annotations as a guide, have students work together with a partner to complete the Socratic Seminar Entry Ticket. As students work, ask who will be inner/outer circle. Provide a "hot seat" in the center.
- Set up the classroom with an inner and outer circle. As students come in, remind them where they chose to sit and have them get out their entry ticket. When all students are seated, share Effective Discussion Report Card from The Core Six: Essential Strategies for Achieving Excellence with the Common Core. Explain they will self-assess after the discussion whether they are on the inner or outer circle--pointing out they can only mark extensively if they reference the text.
- Then, share the Outer Circle Responsibilities with both groups, so they both understand what is happening. Have outer circle select their approach and set up their observation notes accordingly.
- Let the Socratic Seminar commence--allow the students to guide the discussion using their questions and notes. Students on the outer circle my contribute to the discussion by jumping in the "hot seat".
- Provide 5-10 min. after the seminar for outer circle to complete their observations notes, inner circle to complete their reflection, and both to self-assess on the rubric.
- Have students meet up with their partner and share their reflections and observations paying particular attention to their use of evidence to support their thinking throughout the discussion.
